"Feed the Need" After school program:
"In 2007 Hunger Busters decided that the best way to address the hunger epidemic in Dallas was to focus on the future – our communities' children.
Childhood hunger statistics are staggering: In the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) alone, over 87% (136,000+) students receive subsidized breakfast and/or lunch. For too many of these kids, school meals are the only nutrition they can count on. The sad fact is that some children go without any food from lunch one day to breakfast the next, almost 18 hours.
Hunger Busters created the "Feed the Need" after school program in 2007 to address the growing problem of childhood hunger. We began by delivering a third meal of the day to students at one school – James Bowie Elementary. In 2010 we have expanded to serve students in eleven DISD schools, approximately 3300 meals each week (almost 160,000 meals in one year).
Hunger Busters' boxed meal includes: a hearty sandwich, a piece of fresh fruit, cookie, and applesauce/fruit cup. Thanks to our generous product donors, we offer a high quality, well balanced and satisfying meal to kids who do not have access to fresh and nutritious food."
